Describing my audience:
The members of the audience for the Call-to Action will be my immediate supervisor (House Principal), other House Principals (six of them), the Associate Principal for Curriculum, the Associate Principal for Administrative Services, the Associate Principal for Support Services and the campus Principal. The administrative team of the campus (Principal and Associate Principals) are in charge of the campus operations such as daily school operations, coordinating curricula for students, and offer a safe and productive learning environment.. The House Principals have several duties on the campus. For example:
I have included the Administrative Team and the House Principals of my campus because I would like for them to be informed about this Call-to-Action and how we could potentially implement this proposal with the resources and staff that we already have on campus. Ultimately, their expertise as instructional leaders and support will determine if this project could be executed in this school.
Prior knowledge:
I will need to provide information about research, policies and strategies to address the current levels of digital literacy in faculty members and students. I will also need to share data of how online/remote/hybrid learning could benefit student outcomes and engagement if the course design and technology integration are carefully evaluated and are based on researched best pedagogical practices. Additionally, I will share with them how important it is for student learning to have skilled educators that not only know how to implement best pedagogical practices in these types of learning environments, but also being knowledgeable on the ISTE Standards for students and educators, Digital Citizenship, 21st Century Learning Skills, the National Education Technology Plan and the Triple E Framework. The current public health crisis has created an opportunity to enhance learning by integrating technology into the curriculum and to the students’ learning experience. Therefore, providing support to the teachers and students will ultimately narrow the digital literacy gap that exists in our campus.
It is my understanding that they have knowledge and data of the digital access divide that takes place on my campus. This became even more apparent when we had to cancel in-person school last March due to COVID-19. The school administrators had to provide devices to many students during that time for them to be able to complete their school year. Therefore, they have data that shows how many students are using school devices and how some challenges regarding connectivity to the internet have been addressed. I am curious to find out how much they know about the digital user divide that exists in our campus and what they have done to address it. Hopefully, this Call-to-Action will provide an opportunity to the administrative team, faculty members and students to work collectively to narrow the digital illiteracy in the school.
I will anticipate questions related to how to measure the digital literacy of students and teachers. I also foresee questions related to how our current resources such as our learning management system (Canvas) and other learning platforms could be used to help with the digital use divide. Furthermore, I expect for them to ask what could be the possible phases of implementation of this proposal and who will be the educational and student leaders willing to support this project. Also, they may ask what the selection process for the selection of the educational and student leaders would be like?
What would compel members of this group to act upon your proposal?
Since last March, our campus has experienced the challenges that COVID-19 has created for educators and students around the country and the world. We were forced to cancel in-person learning and to find ways to provide educational opportunities to our students for them to be able to finish the school year. During that drastic switch from one learning environment to another, many students and faculty members struggled with the “new normal”. I witnessed how some of my colleagues were at a different level designing and deploying content remotely. I also noticed how some students had a difficult time adapting to this learning modality as well.
According to the 2017-2018 Campus Improvement Plan for Allen High School, “Allen High School embraces the role of technology in the classroom.” Moreover, “AHS recognizes the value in having access to 21st century technology and the school has incorporated applications such as Canvas, Naviance and Skyward to give students an opportunity to use software in a practical way.” Despite these efforts, the campus is viewed as beginner to intermediate regarding the incorporation of technology and learning. Therefore, the members of this group could be compelled to act and support this proposal, since it could provide support to teachers and students on the campus to continue to develop their digital skills during the current pandemic and thereafter.
